The amount of scholarships will increase from the start of the 2023 school year. Sylvie Retailleau even speaks of “ the biggest valuation of the stock market system in 10 years, date on which level 0 bis was created “. Focus on the revaluation of scholarships at university
The result of work carried out since October and announced during the back-to-school conference, Sylvie Retailleau lifted the veil on the first major strong measures aimed at supporting the most precarious students. With a released budget of 500 million euros, all students, whatever their level, will see the amount of their scholarship increase.
From level 1, students receiving a scholarship based on social criteria will see their income increase by 34%, with a net increase of 37 euros per month, or 370 euros per year. Increases are planned for all levels, without Sylvie Retailleau having specified any details for the moment. The only detail: level 7 scholarship recipients will see the amount of their scholarship increase, following inflation, stuck at 6.2%.
Another big news regarding scholarships: more than 20% of students will change level and move to the next level, with increases ranging from 66 euros to 127 euros per month. The Minister of Higher Education and Research also explains how to neutralize threshold effects before permanently eliminating them in future scholarship schemes. Thus, with an increase in the eligibility scale of 6%, a slight increase in parents’ income will not change the students’ grant level. “ These measures aim to support students from modest homes. The assistance for a student must remain in line with the means that his parents can give him. No student will see their scholarship drop by an amount greater than the increase in their parents’ income.. » Furthermore, this change in scale brings 25,000 additional students into the scholarship system.
CROUS accommodation, meals… Sylvie Retailleau’s other announcements on student purchasing power
Student purchasing power was at the heart of Sylvie Retailleau’s intervention. Indeed, the Minister of Higher Education and Research announced that it would make social pricing of meals permanent for scholarship students and precarious students who register with the CROUS. From the start of the 2023 school year, meals at the RU (CROUS university restaurant) will be 1 euro for these groups and 3 euros for other students.
Among Sylvie Retailleau’s other announcements, the freezing of rents for CROUS student accommodation from the start of the 2023 school year. The government is also committed to making up the shortfall for establishments. The minister also affirms that the price of national diplomas (license, master, doctorate) will not change at the start of the 2023 school year.
