Star Trekk' ESCPStar Trekk' ESCPCan you present your journey?

My name is Étienne Joncoux and I am a master 1 student at ESCP BS. I am the president of the Star Trekk’ ESCP association for the 2020-2021 term.

Can you tell us about the different events in Star Trek?

Star Trek’ organizes two events every year. The first, the Star Express, takes place at the end of February or the beginning of March. It brings together around 70 participants around a sporting day in a forest near Paris. The day takes place in two stages: an individual race of around ten kilometers in the morning, followed by a sporting activity in the afternoon whose format changes regularly. For example, last year we organized a pair race in a format Run & Bike. This year, tree climbing is on the program.

The second event is the association’s flagship event: the Welcome to PaRAIDise. This trek organized by Star Trekk’ brings together 130 participants for four days in the mountains. The first day, an individual race of 10 kilometers is on the program, followed by a collective race in groups of four over around twenty kilometers on the second day. The third day is divided into two distinct activities: a water activity (rafting, canyoning, etc.) and an orienteering race. The fourth and last day is devoted to a “pleasure” hike of a few kilometers before taking the train back to Paris. Every day, after the races, the participants meet for a festive dinner, sometimes ending late at night.

Can you come back to Star Trek’s commitment to sustainable development?

Star Trekk’ works in favor of sustainable development through its events. Our values are reflected in our sustainable development charter: selective sorting, responsible food, travel with reduced emissions, actions in favor of inclusion and awareness. Star Trekk’ events are organized in accordance with these values. For example, every evening of the trek, sustainable development awareness activities are organized by members of the association for participants. Star Trekk’ is also a partner of the JRS France association which fights against the isolation and social exclusion of asylum seekers and refugees. As such, refugees who are part of this association are invited to participate in Star Express and Welcome to PaRAIDise with students.

Why would you advise a student to join Star Trek?

Joining Star Trekk’ is above all joining a big family that remains united across generations. It is also the opportunity to organize a large-scale event which requires personal investment throughout the year.

Are your events open to the public? If so, how and when to take advantage of it?

Star Trek events are open to everyone. In reality, all Welcome to PaRAIDise places are sold within a minute and the vast majority of participants are ESCP BS students.

How do I join Star Trek?

Star Trekk’ recruitment is done in two parts. First, students who wish to complete a questionnaire to express their interest in the association. Then, the members of the association meet the motivated students informally, over a drink in the association’s premises at ESCP or outside. These meetings allow you to interact with first-year students in order to select around fifteen people. Star Trekk’ chose not to do interviews so that the exchange with the students was as natural as possible.

How many are you in each mandate?

Each term is made up of around thirty students: half are first years and the other half are second years. The association is made up of an office and 5 centers: canvassing, shopping, communication, logistics and sustainable development. Each second year student is part of the office or a center while the first years come to provide support to the centers that need it on different tasks throughout the year.

What is the impact of covid on your next edition?

Due to the current health context, we are doing everything possible to organize the highest quality trek possible. To do this, the objective is to prepare an edition that can adapt to the health measures put in place by the government. In the meantime, all members of the association are more motivated than ever to ensure the event takes place. As our event takes place outdoors, we are lucky as it is less affected by Covid-19 than others.

Have you thought about doing something different compared to previous editions?

2020 was to be the year of the tenth edition of Welcome to PaRAIDise. Unfortunately COVID decided otherwise. It is therefore this year that this golden edition will take place for which Star Trekk’ is doing everything possible to make it special. It is impossible for us to reveal the contents of this edition, but we can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
