A mandatory bonus for internships lasting more than two months
Today, it is obligatory for employers to pay an employee on internship when the latter lasts more than two months, i.e. 44 days of 7 hours of work, consecutive or not during the school or university year. The salary must be paid every month, it is due from the first day of the first month of the internship period. The amount of the bonus must be fixed in advance in the internship agreement, signed by the intern, his establishment and the company.
For the company, two possible choices exist, pay each end of the month for the number of hours completed or smooth out all the hours that the intern will have to work during their internship over their period and make an identical payment each month. Is the internship salary gross or net?
There are two scenarios. In the first case, which is the most common, the company limits itself to the legal minimum. The intern’s salary is then so low that it is not considered remuneration and is therefore not subject to social security contributions. In summary, for a minimum salary, the gross amount and the net amount are identical.
However, in the second case, if the company decides to pay the intern more generously, social charges apply. Therefore, the gross salary will be slightly different from the net salary. The net salary is the amount that the trainee actually receives in his bank account.

The amount of the interns’ bonus depends on the Social Security hourly ceiling. Due to the pandemic, the Social Security ceiling values have not been increased since January 1, 2020. This is therefore good news for all students who are looking for an internship.
Indeed, from January 1, 2023, the monthly ceiling of the Social security increases from 26 to 27 euros, which results in an increase in the internship salary. From now on, interns will be paid a minimum of 4.05 euros per hour. Thus, the internship salary for one month of work is 623.70 euros net.

Here again, the collective agreement known as HCR (for Hotels-Café-Restaurants) takes into account the legal minimum. The remuneration of an intern in this sector is at least 623.70 euros per month, regardless of the duration of the internship.
