Follow-up email: how to relaunch an application successfully?

Follow-up email: how to relaunch an application successfully?

You’ve finally found the job of your dreams, but, problem: once your CV and cover letter have been sent… No response! A frustrating wait, which may be due to the time the company needs to take to review all applications. To put all the chances on your side and stand out from the competition, it is important to send a follow-up email. Be careful, however, to send it at the right time and in the right way. Business Cool explains it all to you!

Why is it necessary to follow up with the recruiter?

It is very important to restart a company after applying to them, for three reasons. First of all, this ensures that your application has been received. In addition, it demonstrates a certain motivation and strong interest in the position. Finally, this can allow you to put your file at the top of the pile and thus stand out. In reality, it still happens too often that candidates refrain from contacting a recruiter for fear of being annoying, of getting a refusal or of being too insistent and that’s good news! Indeed, by sending a follow-up email, you will demonstrate your determination and your desire to join this company. It is an approach that can bear fruit and convince the recruiter if he or she was not already convinced.

Let’s be honest, you have nothing to lose by sending a follow-up email. In the worst case scenario, in the event of a negative response, this will allow you to move on to other advertisements more quickly and, in the best case scenario, it will save you time preparing for your job interview.

When is the right time to reapply?

Please note, the recovery time is very long. Indeed, an email sent too early and you will come across as someone who is far too impatient, too late and, on the contrary, it will no longer have any effect on your application. In fact, it is recommended to send a follow-up email after an application, whether spontaneous or not, between 10 and 15 days after applying. However, make no mistake, there is no precise rule on the matter. So, if you know from a reliable source that you must obtain a response within three days, you can legitimately follow up after three days. It’s about finding the right balance, don’t harass recruiters, but don’t be afraid to show your determination to join this company.

On this occasion, take the opportunity to summarize the reasons that pushed you to apply for this position and in this company. Do not hesitate to highlight your qualities in accordance with the proposed missions.

Is it a good idea to follow up by phone?

Obviously, if you have their number and are comfortable speaking, don’t hesitate to follow up with your recruiter on the phone. This has many advantages. And for good reason, you will get a direct answer and, in the event of a refusal, you will be able to understand the causes and obtain valuable advice in order to improve subsequently.

However, following up on the phone can be intimidating, the email is less intrusive and more than sufficient, especially if you are at the start of the recruitment process. Even if, like your application, it can sometimes get lost in the twists and turns of your recruiter’s email box.
