Emmanuel Macron: fortune, salary, studies, career

Emmanuel Macron is the current President of the Republic. Elected in 2017, he was re-elected in 2022. Career, fortune, salary… We tell you everything about Emmanuel Macron, from Sciences Po to the Élysée, via Rothschild.

Emmanuel Macron (Emmanuel, Jean-Michel, Frédéric Macron by his full name) was born on December 21, 1977 in Amiens. His father, Jean-Michel, was a doctor, professor of neurology and even head of medicine teaching at the University of Amiens. His mother, Françoise, was a medical consultant for Social Security. He is the eldest of three children.

Emmanuel Macron’s studies and diplomas

Emmanuel Macron spent all of his middle school years and a large part of his high school at La Providence, a private establishment in Amiens. He then completed his secondary studies at the Lycée Henri IV, in Paris. His parents enrolled him there to keep him away from Brigitte Trogneux, his theater and French teacher with whom he had a relationship, and who is now his wife.

Emmanuel Macron continued his studies in the B/L preparatory class at Henri IV, but did not manage to join the ENS, his objective. He then chose to go to Sciences Po, where he began by studying international relations before joining the “Public Service” section in his third year. In addition to his studies, he trained in philosophy at the University of Paris-Nanterre. He graduated from Sciences Po in 2001 and also obtained a DEA in philosophy at Nanterre the same year.

Emmanuel Macron’s entry into ENA and his beginnings in working life

Emmanuel Macron decides to continue his studies after obtaining his diploma at Sciences Po. This decision allows him not to carry out his military service, the date of incorporation of which had already been postponed because of his studies.

The President of the Republic therefore integrates the ENA in 2002. He studied with the Léopold-Sédar-Senghor class. He will follow his journey with Mathias Vicherat, the new director of Sciences Po, or Marguerite Bérard, director of the France networks of BNP Paribas.

He comes out 5e in the ENA ranking, but this ranking had to be canceled by the Council of State, because one of the subjects of the final exam had already been studied by the school’s students. However, Emmanuel Macron is not impacted by this decision and joins the Finance Inspectorate. He then completed an ENA internship at the Abuja embassy in Nigeria and another at the Oise prefecture. In 2007, the future President of the Republic left for the United States and completed an internship for the Rothschild bank which would become his future employer.

Emmanuel Macron at Rothschild

It was in 2008 that he finally decided to take leave and fully integrate the investment bank Rothschild & Co., which is the dream of many management school students. He was recruited thanks to the recommendation of Jacques Attali, Serge Weinberg, (chairman of the Board of Directors of Accor) and Xavier Fontanet (CEO of Essilor International).

In reality, when he joined Rothschild in 2008, Emmanuel Macron already knew that he would be President of the Republic. However, he opted for experience in the private sector for the attractive remuneration offered by investment banking. This decision was partly due to Alain Minc who told him that he would need money to finance his campaigns. In 2010, Emmanuel Macron rose to the rank of partner, after his work on the recapitalization of the newspaper The World and the acquisition of Siemens IT Solution and Services by Atos.

In 2012, when Emmanuel Macron was recognized for his expertise within Rothschild, he was appointed manager. He will therefore lead one of the largest operations: the takeover of Pfizer’s baby milk subsidiary by Nestlé. This operation was estimated at more than nine billion euros and will allow the future President of the Republic to be a millionaire, a fortune that he will not keep for long. Between 2009 and 2013, when he entered the mysteries of power, Emmanuel Macron earned more than 2.5 million euros gross.

The beginnings in politics of Emmanuel Macron, from the MDC to the Ministry of the Economy

At the end of the 1990s, Emmanuel Macron became involved in politics within the “Citizens’ Movement” party founded by Jean-Pierre Chevènement. In 2006, he joined the Socialist Party (PS) and collaborated with the Jean-Jaurès foundation. That same year, he met François Hollande. He tried to run for the PS in the 2007 legislative elections, but encountered opposition from members in Picardy.

In 2011, although Dominique Strauss-Kahn led the polls, Emmanuel Macron supported François Hollande during the left-wing primaries. In 2012, he was rewarded by becoming deputy secretary general of the Élysée, attracting media attention thanks to his youth, his dynamism and his career. In 2014, despite an offer to run for municipal elections in Amiens, he refused. Manuel Valls then suggested to François Hollande to appoint Emmanuel Macron as Budget Minister, but the president refused due to his lack of political experience. Macron therefore leaves François Hollande’s cabinet on June 10, 2014.

Emmanuel Macron then leaves for California with Xavier Niel, where he plans to create a strategy consulting firm. Finally, on August 26, 2014, he was appointed Minister of the Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs. He is particularly known for having introduced the law nicknamed “Macron Law”, relating to growth and purchasing power, a project initiated by his predecessor, Arnaud Montebourg.

Creation of En Marche and candidacy for the 2017 presidential election, then in 2022

In 2016, Emmanuel Macron announced in Amiens that he was founding the En Marche party. His ambition is to create a movement that wants to be at the crossroads of right and left. He also revealed his intention to run in 2017. He then resigned from his post on August 30, 2016, when François Hollande had reminded him that he was required to serve his role as minister to the end.

He began his campaign in April 2016 and several journalists also accuse Emmanuel Macron of having financed part of this campaign with public funds, since he organized several dinners with funds from his ministry, a few days before resigning.

In May 2017, Emmanuel Macron was elected President of the Republic. During his mandate, he faced numerous crises, starting with the Yellow Vests. The coronavirus pandemic then struck and his mandate ended against a backdrop of war in Ukraine.

In May 2022, and despite the war in Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron was re-elected as head of state. The new President of the Republic must therefore continue his work while attaching great importance to playing the role of international mediator on the subject of the war in Ukraine. Emmanuel Macron, whose fortune and salary are revealed a little lower, must also face the challenge of energy sobriety, national food sovereignty and inflation.

The fortune of Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron’s fortune has declined significantly in recent years. Indeed, he had indicated, during his declaration of assets submitted to the HATVP (High Authority for the Transparency of Public Life), that he had earned 2.5 million euros gross between 2009 and 2013. However, today Today, his fortune is well below a million euros, unlike other candidates, such as Valérie Pécresse.

Emmanuel Macron’s fortune is not made up of real estate, as is the case for several other candidates for the 2022 presidential election. In fact, he does not own an apartment or house. He also does not have a personal vehicle.

The President of the Republic’s assets are mainly made up of shares and financial investments. He also receives royalties following the publication of his book “Revolution”. He nevertheless has a property loan intended to finance work the nature of which is not specified. In total, without liabilities, Emmanuel Macron’s fortune amounts to €522,576.20. The salary of Emmanuel Macron and the President of the Republic

The salary of the President of the Republic has always been subject to debate, some find it to be too high. Others consider that it is not clear enough and that the remuneration of the head of state is not transparent enough. This is why, since 2007, its amount has been capped. Today, the salary of the President of the Republic is modeled on the remuneration of the Prime Minister. It amounts to €19,331 gross monthly. However, this is not what Emmanuel Macron touches.

So what is Emmanuel Macron’s salary? How much does he earn? Today, for his role as President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron’s salary is €15,200 gross taxable. The head of state is not exempt from paying taxes. This represents a gross annual salary of €182,400. Emmanuel Macron’s net salary would, according to him, amount to €8,500 per month, with a tax rate of between 25% and 26%.

Thus, Emmanuel Macron’s salary is much lower than that of his international counterparts. The executive with the highest remuneration being that of Singapore. The country is led by its Prime Minister, Hsien Loong, who earns more than $1.6 million per year.

The particularity of the salary of the President of the Republic, however, is the amount he earns when he retires as president, that is to say after his mandate. After his departure in 2027, Emmanuel Macron’s salary will be approximately €15,000 per month, just with his retirement as president. However, the pension reform wants to include the salary of the head of state in the pension plan, which could cause Emmanuel Macron’s salary to drop, after the end of his presidency, to just over 10,000 €.
