As you may have noticed, a large number of graduates from Grandes Écoles represent France at the Tokyo Olympic Games. This Saturday July 31, 2021, it was Thomas Goyard who stood out. The young man from Nouméa won the silver medal in RS:X windsurfing, but the sport is far from being his only asset!
Thomas Goyard’s sporting career
Thomas Goyard was born in 1992 in Martinique, but he grew up and lived almost his entire life in New Caledonia, in Nouméa in particular. He still resides there today. He played his first competition in RS:X windsurfing in 2014. He then won bronze.
During his windsurfing career, Thomas Goyard will be present several times on the podium of European championships and world championships. He even won gold in 2016 in Helsinki. But the consecration will come in Tokyo, at the 2020 Olympic Games.
This silver medal is a surprise for Thomas Goyard who explains that he did not understand what was happening to him. He is still digesting his victory, as reported the Team : “ I still need a few hours, a few days, to realize what happened. Once disqualified, I waited, I did my calculations and said to myself: “It’s going to be good, it’s going to be good. »I’m happy, it’s a lot of emotion. »
The academic career of Thomas Goyard
Alongside his sporting practice, Thomas Goyard followed the path of other athletes like Teddy Riner. He chose not to sacrifice his studies and therefore trained as an engineer. In 2009, he obtained his bac S, with honors, with congratulations from the jury and an average of 18.26/20.
After obtaining this diploma, Thomas Goyard continued in engineering school, within the EIGSI. He will follow his studies from 2011 to 2016. He then has the project of “becoming an engineer specializing in energy, environment, building, as a vector of progress in the quality of life of the inhabitants of New Caledonia”, as he explains. on his LinkedIn account.
He will even be very active in the life of the school since he will create a new association: E2VO – EIGSI Olympic Sailing Team. He will complete two internships during his studies. The first, in 2014, was the design of a trimaran at Neel Trimarans. The second will be carried out in 2017 within the Nouméa Urban Ecology Laboratory. Since then, Thomas Goyard has been involved in the Navy.
